Tacloban-based visual artist Dante Enage has been officially selected as the Philippines’ sole representative artist in the ongoing Beijing International Art Biennale (BIAB). He has made history by putting Eastern Visayas on the global art map, sharing his stories and identity in artworks spread worldwide.
Participating in BIAB 2025, Enage shared with the world’s largest and most prestigious international art exhibitions his large-scale acrylic-on-canvas work entitled “Patterned Paradise” 1 (133 x 265 cm), alongside top artists from different parts of the globe.
The artwork portrays Enage’s visual language, weaving together geometric patterns and organic cultural symbols rooted in his Visayan heritage. The piece incorporates Pintados tattoo motifs and environmental themes that evoke dynamic harmony, exploring the balance between nature and abstract cultural representations.
“In Patterned Paradise, I create a dreamlike sanctuary. It is a celebration of beauty in detail, where birds and cultural echoes coexist to evoke both serenity and wonder,” shared Enage in an interview with SunStar Philippines.
He continues to tell his stories as a Yolanda survivor, fuelling his work to show unity and hope in every color. With his persistence amidst the lack of support in his artistic field, he persevered to reach a pinnacle in the contemporary art community.
Following the pandemic, Enage relocated from Tacloban to Manila, which helped expand his professional artistry and bring his work to a wider audience. Recently, he held his 16th solo exhibition at Art Camp Gallery in Makati last December 2025 and participated in the annual World Art Dubai earlier in 2025. His works have also been exhibited in different countries, including Malaysia, Indonesia, France, and Italy.
Enage hasn’t been the only Filipino who was recognized at the biennale. He is now part of a historic roster with artists Dennis Montera (2013), Maximino Balatbat II (2015), Cristina Taniguchi (2017), and Samuel Penaso and Bong Perez (2019).
The 10th Beijing International Art Biennale (BIAB 2025) will run until January 26 at the Beijing Exhibition Center in Beijing, China.
