Michael and Johanna Claparols, Founders of LAKAT
LAKAT was founded in 2021 by Michael and Johanna Claparols, who were inspired by their travels and their desire to create more sustainable alternatives using locally available materials. Before LAKAT, the pair established the parent company, Creative Definitions in 2008 to promote and develop Negrense products. Their journey led them to explore how indigenous materials and traditional craftsmanship could be developed into modern and sustainable footwear.
The name LAKAT, which means “to walk” in Hiligaynon, reflects the brand’s focus on footwear while also paying tribute to the local communities, weavers, farmers, and creators behind each pair. The brand aims to promote the use of eco-friendly and ethically sourced materials such as pineapple leaf fiber, Philippine cotton, natural rubber, and non-toxic dyes. The fibers are woven into the shoe material by Negrense weavers, allowing the collection to incorporate a piece of Visayan craftsmanship into every pair of shoes. Even the laces are made from our own produce.

Their newest release—the Traveler’s Collection—was revealed at the PURVEYR Fair 2026, inspired by the feeling of exploration and the natural landscapes. Its outsole features distinct curves on each side, with the inner curve following the natural shape of the foot.
