In the realm of healthcare, the path to understanding medicine is often paved with overwhelming medical jargon. For many Filipinos, this can be intimidating to learn, leading to confusion and misleading conclusions about the medicine we take. But what if learning about the medicine in your cabinet was as thrilling as a round of cards with friends?

Enter John Vincent “Vince” Cacho, a 23-year-old innovator who is changing the game—literally. It started in 2024, when Cacho was working in rural communities for his internship. As he spent more time on the ground, he noticed a recurring struggle among patients: the difficulty in remembering the names and purposes of the medications prescribed to them.

“Actually, the idea behind it was to think of something we could integrate into people’s lifestyles that wouldn’t feel overwhelming,” Cacho shared in an interview with Balita. Recognizing that traditional methods of health education were falling short, he sought a way to bridge his dual passions for creative arts and pharmaceutical expertise.

Cacho envisioned a solution that was interactive, fun, and accessible. The result? LUNAS, a Filipino-made educational card game that transforms the dry world of pharmacology into a fast-paced learning experience.

In the game, players race to “cure” illnesses by matching the correct medicine cards, all while throwing in strategic moves to sabotage their opponents. While it carries the competitive spirit of a party game, its core mission is deeply rooted in public health education. The game focuses on over-the-counter (OTC) medicines—the everyday remedies for common ailments like coughs, colds, and fevers—aiming to equip players with the knowledge to handle minor health issues safely.

With the initial spark of the idea, Cacho dedicated himself to perfection, putting the game through over 100 rounds of rigorous playtesting and development, and finally releasing it in late 2025 with a first production run of more than 1,500 copies.

Cacho’s work is a testament to the power of creative problem-solving in the Filipino youth. By turning medical literacy into a shared social experience, he is helping ensure that Filipinos are better informed about the medications they take, ultimately curbing the risks associated with medicinal misinformation and miseducation.

Through LUNAS, we are reminded that innovation doesn’t always have to be a high-tech breakthrough—sometimes, it’s just about making the right information fun, approachable, and ready to play.
