A24 is getting ready to release another horror movie, and this time it’s from a Filipino filmmaker.
Ian Tuason is making his feature-length directorial debut with the upcoming horror film, Undertone. The Canada-born Filipino filmmaker has previously directed independent short films like Continuity Problems (2009), Extreme Close-Up (2011) and The Occurrence on Hollow Road (2018), and is now making his transition to the mainstream.
This story follows Evy (Nina Kiri), a host of a popular paranormal podcast alongside her friend Justin (Adam DiMarco). However, things take a turn from the spooky to the downright unsettling when the pair receive a series of recordings from a couple hearing mysterious noises in their home.
Making use of the budget constraints to tell a unique story, Undertone does away with a huge cast and instead just focuses on its two characters, only showing them on the screen, and using sound to tell the rest of the story. The film was also shot in Tuason’s own home, merging the horrors of his work with his own life for a personal touch that makes it all the more believable.
The film debuted at Canada’s Fantasia International Film Festival last July 2025, where it won gold in the Best Canadian Feature category. It also screened in the Sundance Film Festival just last month. This cements Tuason as a director to watch out for, given that A24 acquired worldwide distribution rights for the film, as the studio is known for some of the most buzzworthy horror films of recent years like The VVitch, Midsommar, and Hereditary.
The film is set for a theatrical release on March 13 in US Theaters, with worldwide release dates yet to be announced. For more information and updates on the film and A24’s catalog, visit a24films.com.
