The Archdiocesan Shrine and Parish of Santo Niño de Tondo in Manila is now recognised as a Minor Basilica after Pope Leo XIV’s declaration.
The title was bestowed on the church last November 9, during the Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica. Delivered by Church Rector Msgr. Geronimo Reyes, the Papal Decree was received by the Archdiocese of Manila Chancellor Fr. Carmelo Arada.
The Minor Basilica title is given to a church that was given a special designation by the Pope due to its historical significance, architectural beauty, or liturgical renown. These churches include a certain precedence before other churches, and are distinguished for ceremonial purposes. And with the declaration, the title offers a closer relationship to the Pope with the right to display the papal symbol of crossed keys on its banners, furnishings, and seal.
Built in 1572, the Archdiocesan Shrine and Parish of Santo Niño de Tondo houses an image of the infant Jesus, which originated from Acapulco, Mexico, handed by a rich merchant to the Archbishop of Manila. It was then turned over to the parish priest of Tondo, Manila.
The decree marks the church as the 29th Minor Basilica in the country. To learn more about the Archdiocesan Shrine of Santo Niño, visit their Facebook page.
